Wei Zhang

Macromolecules and Interfaces Institute,

Department of Sustainable Biomaterials

Virginia Tech

Dr. Zhang has a unique training background in two disparate fields: DNA repair (PhD) and protein engineering (Postdoc). His PhD work with Dr. Daniel Durocher (Lunenfeld) identified new molecular mechanisms of telomere addition to DNA breaks and the spatial organization of DNA repair. For his postdoc studies with Drs. Sachdev Sidhu and Jason Moffat, Dr. Zhang developed structure-based combinatorial protein engineering approaches to design probes modulating protein-protein interactions. His broad research interests are in the field of ubiquitin signaling, protein engineering, targeted protein degradation, genome stability, and cancer therapeutics (www.thezhanglab.com). In the past three years, his lab has been working on development of synthetic biology approaches to manipulate human cell signal transduction cascades to identify new molecular mechanisms and innovative therapeutic strategies. In recognition of Dr. Zhang’s scientific achievement, he is appointed in the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) Humans & The Microbiome program as an Azrieli Global Scholar.
